Common questions

What consultants do I need for a granny flat?

Usually a surveyor, a designer, a BASIX certificate, a structural engineer, a private certifier and a builder. On bush fire prone land, sloping land or a lot with large trees you also need a bushfire consultant, a geotechnical engineer or an arborist.

What consultants do I need for a duplex?

Usually a town planner, a surveyor, an architect or building designer, a BASIX assessor, a structural engineer, a stormwater engineer, a certifier and a builder. Bushfire, flood, heritage, tree and slope constraints each add a specialist.

What consultants do I need for a knockdown rebuild?

Usually a surveyor, a designer, BASIX, a structural engineer, a stormwater engineer, a hazardous materials survey of the old house, a certifier (or council for a DA) and a builder.

Who do I call first?

For anything more than one house, a town planner, to confirm what can be approved before you pay for design. For a granny flat or a knockdown rebuild by CDC, the surveyor, because every design starts from the survey.

Check your block first

The result flags bushfire, heritage, flood, slope and trees, which decide the specialists you need.
