Heritage consultants · the impact statement

Find a Heritage Consultant

A heritage item or a conservation area does not stop development, but it changes what gets approved and takes the fast-track routes off the table. A heritage consultant works out what matters about the place and writes the statement that shows the design respects it.

Who works in your suburb

Type your suburb or your address.

What they do

A heritage impact statement assesses the significance of the item or the streetscape, the effect of the proposal on it, and the changes that would reduce the impact. For a listed item Council may also want a conservation management plan. The consultant advises the architect on form, materials and setbacks that heritage officers will accept.

When you need one

When the heritage chip on your result shows an item or a conservation area, and before the architect starts — a design that respects the heritage from the first sketch gets through; one that is retro-fitted does not.

How to choose

Look for membership of Australia ICOMOS or a heritage-consultant listing with the NSW Heritage Council, and ask for statements that have been approved by your council's heritage officer.
